Important information regarding Windows XP

There is a known Microsoft issue when running a Windows 2000 or Windows XP workstation connecting to a Windows 95/98 or Windows ME server and running network applications from that server. GroupReady is a network application.

With Windows 2000 and Windows XP, Microsoft implemented a new file locking scheme that Windows 95/98 and Windows ME do not support. When the Windows 2000 or Windows XP computer attempts to access files from the server it invokes this special file locking scheme. Since Windows 95/98 or ME do not support this locking scheme the database that the Windows XP machine attempted to access becomes damaged. The new locking scheme is referred to as "Opportunistic Locking".

This problem affects all network database programs including Microsoft's own Access database. Microsoft is aware of the problem and has NO intentions of fixing it. Microsoft has 3 recommendations to solve this problem:

1. Upgrade your server to a Windows 2000 or Windows XP server

or

2. Move the affected applications like GroupReady to a Windows XP workstation and let this workstation function as a server

or

3. Revert to Windows 95/98 or Windows ME on all workstations

Since this issue is a Microsoft operating system issue and not a GroupReady issue, unfortunately there is nothing that can be done in our software to resolve the problem. GroupReady, like other network database programs, requires a basic level of operating system functionality that Microsoft is not supplying with this particular configuration.
